Tokai Registry NAMM 2003 Report

Date:February 2003
Manufacturer:Tokai Gakki
Author:Ned Cullen
Over the next few days I'll add more to this report but to wet your appetite here is the Tokai USA booth.

This year featured the 100th anniversary of the NAMM show and unfortunately it was a bit disappointing this year. Why? Not that much new or unique compared the 2002. I credit this to many companies being hit hard by the MARS bankruptcy.
The first thing to cover is the new Korean headstocks for the Love Rocks models. This will make it much easier to tell the difference between Korean and Japanese made Love Rocks. Also, the Korean models will start shipping with serial numbers. The Korean models have a large round hill, for lack of a better term, in the center of the headstock, image on left. While the Japanese headstock is on the right.
How about we take a trip down paisley lane. Here we have both the NLS80-PR and the new paisley SG80-PR which features a paisley back. The list price for both the NLS80-PR and SG80PR is $1,450.
Here is a shot of the NSG60 in wine red which has a list price of $1100.00.
And you can't forget the wonderful people who work in the booths. Which BTW is killer on your feet, mine are still hurting.
The NES120 is the Japanese made 335 copy and is a gorgeous guitar with a list price of $1,900. The NES100 is also made in Japan, list price is $1,750. The difference is the top with the NES120 have a flame maple top, back and sides while the NES100 has a maple top, back and sides. There is also a Korean version of the NES.
This awesome Les Paul Jr attracted a lot of attention is actually brough quite a few people into the booth.
We end our Tokai coverage with two new models, the LR-30 and LR-40 which are both gorgeous guitars. The LR-30 has a book matched 5A flamed maple neck while the LR-40 has a book matched 5A quilted body. The list prices are $2,300.00 and $2,500.00 respectively. Other specs include:
  • Arched top double cutaway
  • Two piece mahogany back
  • Neck: Maple set-neck
  • Rosewood fingerboard
  • Natural maple wood binding
  • PAF-Alnico Vintage MK-4 pickups
